The Well-Trained Mind

Usborne titles listed in green are an essential part of the curriculum as outlined in the book, "The Well-Trained Mind" (2004). Books listed in blue are recommended in book lists for that subject and grade. "OTHERS" are books that fit perfectly into the curriculum but are not listed in the limited suggestions in TWTM or were not yet released at the time TWTM was being updated. Some titles are already out of print (OP) and are listed in red, but substitutions are suggested when possible.

Essential Usborne Books for TWTM curriculum:

GRAMMAR STAGE (Grades 1-4)

Literature:

OTHERS: Stories From Shakespeare, A Tale of Two Cities, Adventures of Ulysses, Don Quixote, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Dracula, Frankenstein, The Hound of the Baskervilles, Jane Eyre, Jason and the Argonauts, Kidnapped, Moby Dick, Tales of King Arthur, Tales of the Trojan War and Wuthering Heights. These books would be good as read alouds for younger ones or as an introduction to classics for older readers in the grammar stage.

Music:

First Book of the Recorder
Piano Course Book One & Book Two (Going OP)
OTHERS: Recorder Tunes for Children, Easy Recorder Tunes for Children, Piano Tunes for Children, Easy Piano Tunes. An excellent and inexpensive program for this stage would be to use the four "recorder" books listed here. Use the "First Book of the Recorder" as your foundation text for learning to play, then use the other books for weekly practice pieces to learn. This could easily last 2-3 years depending on how ambitious you are. You can also get "First Book of the Recorder" packaged with a recorder!

Art:

OTHERS: I Can Draw Animals, I Can Draw People, What Shall I Draw?, Origami, Papercraft

All 4 years:
* IL Encyclopedia of World History
Big Book of Experiments - useful for experiements all four years.

OTHERS: Art Ideas, Art Skills, Art Projects (these three titles are also available in one volume and would provide plenty of art ideas to last all four years), Introduction to Modern Art (a nice addition to the above-mentioned Introduction to Art)
